Did you know that one in four children in Pierce County does not get enough to eat and that 75% of the children in Franklin Pierce Schools qualify for free and reduced lunch? For many children in our immediate area, school lunches are the only nutritious meals they get, and they are hungry over the weekend. In 2012-13, moved by their stories and compelled to make a difference, Our Savior Lutheran Church launched an outreach program in our neighborhood designed to feed these hungry children.
Working with school counselors, the Backpacks 4 Kids program identifies children who are known to go without food over the weekend and supplies them with child-friendly, food items that are easy to open and prepare. The food is packed each week by volunteers, placed into individual bags, and sent home with students on Friday. The program currently feeds 180-200 students each week in Franklin Pierce and runs from September to June.
But the program is only sustainable with your help!
B4K is fully dependent upon volunteers, gifts, and donations, and new members are always welcome to the B4K team! Franz Bakery, Thrivent Financial, United Way Power Packs, Nourish Food Bank, Puyallup Food Bank, MultiCare, and the Franklin Pierce Teachers’ Association are just a few examples of local folks who are pitching in. Helping out is easy, and it makes a world of difference to developing children.
Here are some ways you can help:
